• Fall 2013 Beauty Trends 101

Even though it still feels like we’re in the dead of summer here in Atlanta, the fact that fall (my favorite season) is only a few days away makes me both excited and anxious. With the changing of the seasons comes a need to change ones wardrobe, home decor and most importantly beauty routine. From skincare to hair care and even makeup, the fall season brings cooler temperatures, shorter days with natural sunlight and a tendency to go darker and deeper when it comes to hair color and makeup shades.

In order to help you (my loyal readers) navigate the fall 2013 beauty trends, I figured I would make it easy and simple with a few key trends to watch for and incorporate into your routine:

Oxblood lips are THE must have lip color this Fall. In the past, the deep reds, crimsons and wine colors have all been staples for autumn but this year, the color goes deeper, darker and much more dramatic. The best way to wear this dangerous color is matte or semi-matte. Glossy dark lips can look too vampy. Pair this bold lip with a very neutral eye and barely there cheek.

  • Beauty by the Book: Color-Blocking Lips

Spring officially begins tomorrow but you wouldn’t know that with the wild temperature swings of late. To get in the mood of spring, I have found myself gravitating towards my seasonal bright makeup such as bubblegum pink blushes and sizzling coral nail polishes. One such trend for spring that was seen on this year’s and last year’s runways was color-blocking. Color-blocking is where you juxtapose two bright shades to create a brilliant yet modern take on color. I love the idea of color-blocking my lip color as this would add a touch of whimsy to what would otherwise be an ordinary spring bright lip. The key to this trend is pairing up the perfect two shades for your skin tone.

    • For those who have cool undertones, I would suggest going for a bright bubblegum pink paired with a light lavender or purple shade. It’s all about working with lip colors that have cool undertones.
    • For those with warm undertones, I would suggest going for a hot coral paired with a dazzling bright fuchsia. The effect is sure to get you noticed.

  • How to Rock the Spring 2013 Bright Lip Trend

Last spring we were all re-introduced to color in a bold yet fun way. From color-blocking to bright lips and nails, color reigned supreme. With spring 2013 only a few weeks away, it is safe to say that color is still a major part of the spring style landscape with a few tweaks. Many beauty brands have upped the ante on their bright lip colors by going more neon. Another difference is texture. Last spring, many of the lip colors had a creamy consistency which left lips looking saturated and luscious. This spring, bright lip colors have gone matte for a dramatic result that pairs well with the season’s overall vibrant appeal. Here are a few simple steps on how to work the new neon bright lip trend for spring 2013.

    • Choose your spring bright lip colors by using your natural undertone as a cue to which direction you should go. For those with cool or blue undertones – opt for bright bubblegum pinks, bright peaches and cherry or candy apple reds. For those with warm or yellow undertones, opt for hot fuchsias, vibrant corals and delicious tangerines.
    • Keep the rest of your beauty look understated and simple so as not to clash with your super fun bright lip. Go for bronzey smoky eyes or a swipe of black liquid liner over a nude eye and a lightly bronzed cheek and you’re ready for your close-up.
    • Opt for a matching lip liner in the exact same shade as your bright lip color in order to get the most precise look. Line lips and use a lip brush to help soften edges and create a framework for your bright lip color. This step prevents your lipstick from feathering and bleeding outside of your lip line.
    • Exfoliate lips in preparation for your lip color application. You can use a lip scrub or you can use a dry toothbrush to remove dry or chapped skin from your delicate lip area. Be sure to prime lips with a wax-based lip balm like Carmex or Burt’s Bees.
    • Take your look up a few notches by using two bright shades instead of one. Try fuchsia and tangerine or bubblegum pink and peach. Just apply the first shade all over the lip leaving the center of your top and bottom lip untouched. Next apply the second shade into the center of the top and bottom lip for a fun yet multi-dimensional look that will have you smiling all season long.
