  • Product Review: Urbanbella Signature Series Hair Care Line

One of the perks of being a beauty writer and blogger is getting the opportunity to try out new products. Just the other day, I received a package from Urbanbella - a curly hair sanctuary nestled in the heart of Buckhead, a tony neighborhood in Atlanta. Along with curly hair consultations and styling, Urbanbella sold many of the top curly hair care brands on the market including; Curls, Jane Carter Solution Phyto, Hair Rules and many more. Over the years, Keneesha Hudson, the owner of Urbanbella decided to venture out and create her own signature hair care line for curly hair.

That’s how Urbanbella Sigature Series Hair Care came about. Keneesha had the desire to produce a quality hair care line that addressed all of the needs of her clients and curly hair women everywhere. One of the very first things I noticed when using this line is the incredible scents. Being that the aroma of a product is highly important to me, I was super happy that each product smelled utterly delicious. Another aspect that caught my attention is that this collection is paraben, silicon and sulfate-free. As someone who seeks out healthy hair care, skincare and beauty products, I was thrilled at the prospect of treating my hair to a healthy line of products that wouldn’t cause any damage or harm. • Sleeping Beauty: 8 Beauty Tricks To Roadtest While You Snooze

Don’t you think beauty should be effortless? So effortless that you could become more gorgeous in your sleep? Turns out you can.

Not only does getting some shut-eye make you appear prettier (it’s called ‘beauty sleep’ for a reason), but it affords an opportunity to begin your beauty routine earlier; meaning less time spent primping and preening in the morning, and yes, longer lie-ins. Here are some fantastic overnight tricks that mean you can wake up feeling and looking more attractive.

    Soft Hands And Feet

Are your brittle hands and feet a constant source of shame? Go biblical by soaking your hands and feet in a bowl of water – add some Epsom salts, if you have any. It should only take five minutes, and then you can whip out your exfoliating gloves to start removing dead skin cells.

Next, apply heavy duty moisturizer to both your hands and feet, place cotton gloves and socks on top, and then peel off in the morning. We promise, your extremities will never have felt so soft!

    Shiny Locks

Would you love to wake up every morning with glossy, touchable hair? Use a sleep-in hair mask to nourish and condition while you’re dreaming of silky strands. All you have to do is rinse out the product and blow-dry in the morning. You’ll wonder why you never did this before!

    Satin Sheets

There’s something exceptionally decadent about satin bed linen, but this skin-stroking material actually ups your beauty echelon. Not only does it stop damaging friction attacking your hair at night, but it’ll prevent the nasty build-up of oils on your face that lead to breakouts and blemishes.

    Volume For Fine Hair

Fine-haired girls, we feel your pain. Every day it seems like we have the same boring hair and any attempts to change-up our style fall limp by lunchtime. Prevent this from happening by adding volumizing mousse to your tresses before bed and sleeping in hot rollers. Soft foam additions prevent an uncomfortable night, and you only need to curl some important sections.

Note: position curlers so they’re not digging into your scalp – what’s the point in glorious, thick hair if you look like you haven’t slept a wink.

In the A.M., shakeout any large curls with your fingers and coat with hairspray. Flip your head and spritz under your roots too, for lasting volume.

    Mermaid Hair

Look at any runway this season and you’ll see that romantic mermaid hair is having a moment. However, that doesn’t mean that you should rush out and buy a set of crimping irons (more heat for your poor tresses). Instead, sleep on it.

Before you turn off the lights, apply a little cream or gel to just-wet hair and braid in little plaits – the smaller they are, the more intense the crimp (you probably want a happy medium). In the morning, all you have to do is loosen the braids and you’re good to go.

  • Product Review: AG Recoil Curl Activator

This is not me! It's a pic of a gorgeous curly girl!

Ever since the winter season began, my poor hair has been dry, lackluster and in dire need of some therapy. When I’m not wearing it straight, I try to let it be and wear it curly but I wasn’t having much luck with my usual products. Fortunately, there is always some magical product waiting to be discovered in my ample beauty closet. I reached into the hair care section and pulled out the AG Recoil Curl Activator.

At first glance, it seemed just like any other curly hair cream or gel. It’s a creamy, lightweight creamy gel that goes on smooth and effortless. The trick is to slightly wet your hair or at least dampen your hair before applying this product. I use about a quarter-size to half-dollar amount of product as I have a lot of hair and want all of my curls to be coated. I let the product soak into the hair and let it slightly air dry before styling.

My curls have never looked better. Not only are they defined but they are not crunchy and sticky. My hair looks touchable and soft minus any frizz or flyaways. It is seriously going to be my go-to curly product for the rest of 2013. I am so happy that I found a product that makes my curly hair look its best. I am motivated to wear my curly hair out and down this year as it has grown out quite a bit over the past two years. I highly recommend this product for any curly girls out there who aren’t happy with their current curly regimen.

The AG Recoil Curl Activator retails for $20 at Ulta.com and Ulta stores nationwide.

  • The Benefits of Co-Washing – Curly Hair 101

Co-washing may be a new term for many of you but it’s not a new technique. Co-washing is short for conditioner washing which means instead of washing your hair with shampoo and following it up with conditioner, you skip the shampoo step altogether and just wash your hair with conditioner. As a curly girl with multi-textured tresses, I have been utilizing this technique for years now and the results have been astounding!

One of the reasons I love co-washing is because it allows me to keep my curls clean and hydrated without having to wash my hair with shampoo on a daily basis. The problem with curly girls shampooing their hair every day is that you are stripping your hair of its natural oils which can lead to damage, breakage and extreme dryness.

As someone who works out on a daily basis, co-washing is the answer to ridding hair of sweat, dirt and product build-up. After a grueling workout, the idea of going to bed with a head full of sweaty, dirty hair is not an option. Usually what I do is rinse my hair and apply a light coating of conditioner. I let the conditioner soak into the hair while I finish showering. After a good five minutes or so, I wash out the conditioner,  gently detangle my curls with a wide tooth comb and let my hair air dry before heading to sleep.

If you have never tried co-washing, trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Not only is my hair healthy and shiny, it’s super strong and growing like weeds. I only shampoo my hair once a week and I typically use sulfate-free shampoos when I do wash. Curly hair is fragile, chronically dry hair which means you need to consistently maintain your moisture and hydration levels while limiting the amount of product build-up, sweat and dirt that accumulates in your hair.

Another great benefit of co-washing is the moisturization of your scalp. As we all know, a healthy scalp is the foundation of beautiful hair. A dry, irritated scalp will lead to damaged hair follicles and breakage. As you nourish your hair with conditioner, you are also softening and hydrating your scalp.

Co-washing is my healthy hair care secret and now it can be yours too!
