  • Fall 2013 Beauty Trends 101

Even though it still feels like we’re in the dead of summer here in Atlanta, the fact that fall (my favorite season) is only a few days away makes me both excited and anxious. With the changing of the seasons comes a need to change ones wardrobe, home decor and most importantly beauty routine. From skincare to hair care and even makeup, the fall season brings cooler temperatures, shorter days with natural sunlight and a tendency to go darker and deeper when it comes to hair color and makeup shades.

In order to help you (my loyal readers) navigate the fall 2013 beauty trends, I figured I would make it easy and simple with a few key trends to watch for and incorporate into your routine:

Oxblood lips are THE must have lip color this Fall. In the past, the deep reds, crimsons and wine colors have all been staples for autumn but this year, the color goes deeper, darker and much more dramatic. The best way to wear this dangerous color is matte or semi-matte. Glossy dark lips can look too vampy. Pair this bold lip with a very neutral eye and barely there cheek.

  • Fall in Love with the Season’s Best Beauty and Fashion Trends

As seasons change, so do the hot and fashionable beauty tips and make-up trends. Fall beauty trends add style and dimension to the simplest of make-up routines. Daily beauty routines can be as complicated or as simple as the wearer chooses to use. Make-up choices and routines can be as natural or as chic as the occasion warrants.

Try some of these tip-to-toe fall beauty trends and feel the instant transformation into the stylish and chic woman you dream of seeing in the mirror.

    Let’s Start with Make-up

By simply beginning with a neutral base make-up and a barely there look, the face becomes a palette to create a sultry, fresh, dramatic or glamorous look. You decide the look you are trying to achieve and work from there. Here are a few ideas:

    The Eyes Have It

Growing popularity with eye definition is shown in the presentation of cat eyes. Cat eyes can be achieved by using thin, dark eyeliner along the lash line of the upper lid. Eyeliner should be curved up ever-so-slightly at the outside edge of the lid, hence the cat eye appearance.

Some women do not like the cat eye look so opt to make their eyes appear more dramatic by applying several layers of dark colored mascara.

Thick eyebrows have replaced the formerly popular skinny brow look. Strong, full brows create a sexy but take-me-seriously appearance. The heavier eye make-up look clearly supports the fall and winter season’s more layered wardrobe.

Dusty rose, not the old-fashioned pink, eye shadow has replaced the formerly popular taupe eye shadow. Neutral tones are becoming quite prevalent in eye shadow color.

    Let’s Get Cheeky

Two tones are becoming popular in cheek color, whether using powder or cream blush application: a pinky bronze or a peachy honey-colored blush. Gone are the bronzy tones that made you look tanned all year.

Now Onto Hair Styles and Trends

Casual hairstyles are the latest season’s trend. Soft, loose styles, whether tied back or loose curls, are both chic and comfortable. There are several popular hairstyles being shown for daywear and special occasions alike. Try one of these trending hairstyles:

    ·      Loosely pulled back hair where the hair is worn half up and half down

    ·      Low, braided ponytail starting at the nape of the neck

    ·      Low, side-swept bun

    ·      Blunt bangs with otherwise long, straight hair

    ·      Short bob-style haircut, with blunt bangs or not

Vary your hairstyle to suit the outfit you choose to wear and the day’s schedule you have planned.

The Finishing Touch of a Manicure and Pedicure

Nail polish is making a strong fashion statement. Nails are no longer shown in a subtle pink or nude color. Rather, they are shiny and bold in color. Short, square shaped nails are replacing the long, pointed look of earlier days. The most frequently shown fall manicure and pedicure colors and tones are:

    ·      Jewel-toned colors like sapphire, emerald, khaki, plum or gray

    ·      Metallic and sparkle colors including gold, silver, copper, gunmetal and bronze

    ·      Bold colors like purple, teal and pumpkin

    ·      Dark nail polish including burgundy or dark red

What is Your Look Going to Be?

Every woman has the choice about what her fall beauty look will be, dramatic or subtle. The color palette of make-up she chooses will dictate her finished style and appearance.

The best seasonal beauty trend advice:

Mix and match a few of the aforementioned fall trends until you achieve the look you desire. There is a perfect combination just waiting to be created.

  • Hands Off – Smooth Skin Tips for Fall

Just the other day I was working on an article about smooth skin when I looked down at my own hands and was completely shocked at how dry and chapped they were. I suffer from serious hang-nailitis during the fall and winter months and find myself practically dipping my hands in bowls of olive oil just to keep my hands somewhat moisturized. Fortunately, I have found some easy tips over the years that keep my hands looking and feeling their best especially during the coldest months of the year. Follow these easy steps and you’ll have beautiful hands that you won’t have to hide in a pair of cashmere gloves.

    • When you wash your hands, immediately afterwards slather them in moisturizing hand lotion so you won’t dry them out.
    • Exfoliate the skin on the tops of your hands just like you would your face, neck and decolletage. It’s important to remove the dead skin in order to maintain flawless, beautiful skin on your hands.
    • For an affordable and effective spa treatment for hands, purchase some petroleum jelly and saran wrap. At night, before bed, apply generous amounts of the jelly onto your hands and wrap them securely with the saran wrap. While you sleep, the ultra moisturizing effects of the jelly will penetrate the top layer of the skin leaving your hands, cuticles and nails soft and smooth as a baby’s bottom. When you wake up the next morning, just remove the saran wrap and you’re set!
    • In order to keep your cuticles smooth and healthy, apply a nutrient rich essential oil such as argan oil or sesame oil to your cuticles every morning and night. A small amount of oil is all you will need to keep your cuticles soft so don’t do overboard or you’ll wind up with a case of the greasies.
    • Limit your contact with hot water if possible. Try to take lukewarm baths and showers and when washing hands after the restroom, opt for mild to warm water over scalding hot water. Hot water instantly dries out the skin leaving your hands feeling irritated, chapped and flaky.

  • Beauty by the Book: Ombre Lips

The ombre trend has been really big this year. From clothes to hair to accessories, everywhere you turn, you can see the ombre trend working its cool magic in the world of style. One of the most fun ways to do ombre is with makeup. I am loving the ombre trend on the lips. It’s super fun and very fashion forward. It pairs well with the nude trend that is big for fall where eyes and cheeks go natural and lips take center stage. One of the keys things about this trend is lip pencils as they help to map out the areas where you want to manipulate the color. Check out this fun tutorial from YouTube Beauty Guru Nikki!
