One way to instantly liven up your look is with a captivating bright lip color. • Natural Beauty 101

Have you ever wondered how to get that healthy, happy glow you see on so many celebrities these days? Organic beauty products can help you achieve a natural-looking beauty. While the Kardashian sisters would have you believe otherwise, makeup can be used to enhance natural beauty without it looking like you’ve painted your face or used makeup to alter your image. You can apply makeup using colors and textures that highlight the freshness of your own look. Using organic products, follow this 7-step process for the perfect natural look:

    1. Start with a clean, dry face. Apply makeup in bright light.
    2. Moisturize your skin with a gentle, organic moisturizer, preferably one with SPF protection of at least 15
    3. If you choose to wear foundation, choose one that is right for your skin type (dry, oily, balanced) while matching in shade. Lightly apply the foundation and blend carefully. You often need less foundation than you think, so start with a small amount and add more if needed. The foundation should even out your color (yellow tones work best to even out tone without adding color).
    4. Lightly apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. Blush should be creamy and in a shade close to or one shade darker than your natural lip color.
    5. Choose an eye shadow color that is just a shade or two darker than your skin color, or stick to browns, taupes, and plums to enhance your eyes without looking too made up.
    6. Instead of thick, goopy eyeliner and mascara, try a clear mascara that lengthens your lashes. Skip the liner completely. If your eyes fade without a little more enhancement, consider gray or brown liner instead of dark black. If you do use liner, you can add just a smudge at your top lashes rather than line your whole eye for a softer, more natural look.
    7. Lightly tint lips or choose a clear gloss.

  • Cruelty-Free Cosmetics 101

I love animals. I have been an animal lover as far back as I can remember. Growing up in sunny Southern California, my house was always filled with the sounds of laughter and fun and animals. We had dogs and cats who were more than pets, they were considered family members. My mother and father raised my brother and I to be respectful of all animal life and to acknowledge that animals had feelings just like humans do. Growing up, I wanted to be a veterinarian until I found out that there was surgery and scalpels and blood involved. Being that I am quite squeamish, I soon realized that a career in animal medicine wasn’t a wise decision but my love for the animal kingdom never changed.

In the past few years, I have become more aware of the issues of animal testing and animal cruelty. As I have begun to move away from eating meat and am slowly transitioning into a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle, I am beginning to look into all of the areas where I may or may not be impacting the animal kingdom in a negative way. One way I do have a lot of control over is my beauty regimen and the products I choose to use for my daily routine. In order to help further the cause of eliminating animal testing all together, I am no longer purchasing items or brands that test their products on animals.

Fortunately,  there are countless cosmetic and beauty brands that do not test on animals. These companies have made a concerted effort to lessen the already overwhelming amount of cruel testing on innocent animals who live their entire lives within the confines of laboratories.

Here are a few incredible brands that I highly recommend checking out as they are cruelty-free which is truly a beautiful thing!

  • How to Rock the Spring 2013 Bright Lip Trend

Last spring we were all re-introduced to color in a bold yet fun way. From color-blocking to bright lips and nails, color reigned supreme. With spring 2013 only a few weeks away, it is safe to say that color is still a major part of the spring style landscape with a few tweaks. Many beauty brands have upped the ante on their bright lip colors by going more neon. Another difference is texture. Last spring, many of the lip colors had a creamy consistency which left lips looking saturated and luscious. This spring, bright lip colors have gone matte for a dramatic result that pairs well with the season’s overall vibrant appeal. Here are a few simple steps on how to work the new neon bright lip trend for spring 2013.

    • Choose your spring bright lip colors by using your natural undertone as a cue to which direction you should go. For those with cool or blue undertones – opt for bright bubblegum pinks, bright peaches and cherry or candy apple reds. For those with warm or yellow undertones, opt for hot fuchsias, vibrant corals and delicious tangerines.
    • Keep the rest of your beauty look understated and simple so as not to clash with your super fun bright lip. Go for bronzey smoky eyes or a swipe of black liquid liner over a nude eye and a lightly bronzed cheek and you’re ready for your close-up.
    • Opt for a matching lip liner in the exact same shade as your bright lip color in order to get the most precise look. Line lips and use a lip brush to help soften edges and create a framework for your bright lip color. This step prevents your lipstick from feathering and bleeding outside of your lip line.
    • Exfoliate lips in preparation for your lip color application. You can use a lip scrub or you can use a dry toothbrush to remove dry or chapped skin from your delicate lip area. Be sure to prime lips with a wax-based lip balm like Carmex or Burt’s Bees.
    • Take your look up a few notches by using two bright shades instead of one. Try fuchsia and tangerine or bubblegum pink and peach. Just apply the first shade all over the lip leaving the center of your top and bottom lip untouched. Next apply the second shade into the center of the top and bottom lip for a fun yet multi-dimensional look that will have you smiling all season long.
