  • Curly Girl 101 – Sulfate-Free Shampoos

Healthy curly hair has a lot to do with the products that you use on a daily basis. One of the most important and regularly used products in a curly girl’s arsenal is her shampoo. As we all know, shampooing your hair helps rid the hair and scalp of dirt, debris, oil and product build-up. The issue with most mainstream shampoos is that they are made for those with straight hair. Straight haired individuals need to wash their hair more frequently because their hair tends to get oily very fast due to the fact that their hair shaft is straight and the oil travels down from the scalp to the hair follicle with no interruption. When manufacturers formulate their shampoo products, they tend to put more detergents and other oil-stripping mechanisms into the formula which in turn helps eradicate the oil build-up from the scalp leaving hair clean, refreshed and healthy.

Curly haired individuals have the opposite issue. Our hair tends to be dry as the curl pattern inhibits the natural oils from making its way down the hair shaft as quickly as our straight haired counterparts. When we use shampoos that are made for straight-haired individuals, our hair is stripped of the much-needed oils leaving our hair damaged, broken and extremely dry. That is why it is important to look for sulfate-free shampoos which are hair cleansers without the common detergents and other oil-stripping agents found in common shampoo products.

  • Product Review: Carol’s Daughter Vanilla Truffle Body Butter

Carol's Daughter Vanilla Truffle Body Cream, $13, www.carolsdaughter.com

If you know anything about me, you know I have an obsession with smelling like warm, delicious baked goods. From cinnamon buns to frosted cupcakes, I love smelling sinfully sweet. Just the other day, I had the amazing opportunity to satisify my sweet tooth when I received a box full of goodies from Carol’s Daughter. I instantly gravitated towards the Vanilla Truffle Body Cream and wasn’t the least bit disappointed when I took a generous whiff of the sumptuous vanilla body cream. This body moisturizer is chock full of antioxidants and essential oils including soybean oil, sunflower seed oil and coconut oil. It’s an extremely emollient body cream that will keep your skin luxuriously smooth and soft to the touch. What I love most about this tempting treat is the delectable vanilla scent. It lingers on you like a beautiful perfume without overpowering you. I literally smelled the lovely aroma on my bathrobe the next day. I will be a creamy vanilla dream this fall as I enjoy my Vanilla Truffle Body Cream.

  • Mary J. Blige Set to Launch Second Fragrance “My Life Blossom” on HSN

Mary J. Blige is a wonderful example of faith, determination, perserverance and strength. As the queen of hip-hop and R&B, she has maintained her reign in a music business that has seen major changes in the last decade. Known for her soulful lyrics, emotionally-stirring performances and around the way girl appeal, Mary has fashioned her style and image into major money. One of her most successful ventures has been as one of the faces of Carol’s Daughter, an African-American owned and operated beauty company launched out of a Harlem kitchen and onto the international marketplace. Last year, Mary launched her first fragrance for Carol’s Daughter, My Life, which sold out on HSN and garnered Mary and the Carol’s Daughter brand much success and a new group of fans.

She just recently launched her second fragrance, “My Life Blossoms” and will certainly experience as much success or more! “My Life Blossoms” is a lighter, airer version of the original “My Life” fragrance. Notes such as gardenia, tuberose, jasmine and vanilla along with mandarin, white freesia, orange flower and sandalwood all come together beautifully to create a clean floral that is sophisticated and simplistic.

  • Carol’s Daughter Taps Solange, Cassie and Selita Ebanks for New Ad Campaign

Carol’s Daughter is an international beauty brand with a cult-like following and several celebrity fans who love their hair care, fragrances and makeup. Well, Lisa Price, the owner and founder of Carol’s Daughter is taking a step in a bold new direction with her latest ad campaign. She has enlisted the help of three multiethnic celebrities – Cassie, Selita Ebanks and Solange for upcoming ad campaigns for her beauty brand. This strategic move has occurred because of the rise of biracial and multiethnic people in the US. During the most recent census report, there was a noticeable jump in individuals who picked two or more races in order to identify themselves. The multiethnic population is growing fast and as someone who can certainly identify ( I am Creole – African-American, French, Spanish and Native American) I am very happy to see major beauty brands begin to reflect the reality that I have always championed and embraced! Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors and backgrounds, the sooner we all embrace this idea, the happier and healthier this society will be!
