Skin Care Tips for Men of Color

June 10th, 2013

While all men should take good care of their skin to keep it healthy and looking smooth, African-American men have particular skincare needs and shaving issues that can be easily addressed with an appropriate skincare regimen. Because of the growth pattern and natural curl, for example, African-American skin can be more prone to bumps and ingrown hairs. Dry skin and hyper-pigmentation can also cause problems, making it important to keep skin smooth and moisturized. The good news is that all of these problems are easily remedied or avoided with proper skincare habits. Below are some helpful tips to keep African-American skin looking and feeling great:

1. Cleansing is Crucial— The number one tip for any good skincare regimen is to get into a good daily cleansing routine. Sometimes you’re tired at the end of a day and you may want to flop into bed without washing your face, but you must stay vigilant. To keep your pores from clogging and razor bumps from forming, consistent cleansing is an especially important habit to maintain.

2. Moisturizing is Mighty— Many people have dry skin, but with African-American skin, this dryness can cause an uncomfortable tight or itchy feeling and a grayish tone to the dry areas of the skin. Use a daily oil-free moisturizer, and be sure to buy a lotion specifically for sensitive skin if scented skin products bother you. Also: Use a gentle dermatologist-recommended soap to wash your face (instead of harsh deodorant body soap) and take warm showers rather than hot to help keep skin from drying out.

3. Exfoliation is Excellent— Exfoliation of the skin is done by scrubbing with a facial puff or loofah, and can help the skin look brighter by removing dead skin cells on the surface that contribute to a dry, ashy appearance. Gentle exfoliation of the face can also help release ingrown hairs to eliminate shaving bumps, but be sure to be gentle and use a washcloth rather than a scrubbing puff, and don’t rub too hard.

4. Try a Toner— There are many toners on the market that can help remove any dirt or oil missed during the nightly cleansing process if you’re experiencing issues with blackheads or acne breakouts (which can lead to hyper-pigmentation or dark spots). Apply toner to a cotton ball and give your face a refreshing wipe down before bed or upon waking in the morning to brighten your complexion.

5. Be a Super Shaver— To help avoid the razor bumps that can plague the skin of African-American men, take care to shave properly every time. A thick, moisturizing shaving cream is recommended to help soften the skin, and a sharp razor can help limit ingrown hairs by giving a smoother edge to the individual follicles. If possible, try not to shave every day in order to give your face a chance to heal, and always shave in the direction of hair growth. This may not get you the closest shave possible, but it might help cut down on the razor bumps (a.k.a. pseudofolliculitis barbae) that affect around 60% of black men.

6. Don’t Skip the Sunscreen— The extra melanin helps to protect black men from skin cancer, yet darker-skinned individuals are more likely to die from skin cancer than lighter-skinned people because it goes undetected to the point of melanoma. In general, the extra pigmentation of darker skin gives African-Americans a natural SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of around 13, so it is still recommended that sunscreen be worn. Plus, we all know the sun ages us, and nobody wants to do that any faster than they need to, right? A naturally-based sunscreen for sensitive skin worn every day is a great way to spare your skin unnecessary damage from the sun’s rays. Genetics give every one of us different issues and certain needs, and these 6 simple tips can help keep men’s skin healthy and glowing.

With proper care and a great skincare regimen, African-American skin can easily stay smooth, moisturized and looking great. S.O.S. Save Our Skin: Sunburn 101

May 28th, 2013

So, after a long extended holiday weekend with way too much sun and fun, I committed a cardinal sin – I got sunburned!!! Yes, women of color do get sunburned just like our white or fair skinned counterparts. Even though the burn may not be as noticeable as someone with very light skin, we still suffer from peeling, redness, inflammation and dryness. In order to heal and rejuvenate my skin after a serious sunburn, it’s important to create a very consistent healing regimen that you can stick to for awhile as your skin heals. Here is my skincare regimen for a summer sunburn!

After Sun Care:

The instant you notice red, sunburned skin, you need to reach for some after care. I prefer something aloe-based as the cooling sensation is exactly what my sun-parched skin needs. Clinique’s After Sun Rescue Balm with Aloe is the perfect answer to sun-soaked skin. This aloe-based cream has a special repair complex that soothes, calms and nourishes dry, damaged and inflammed skin. Smooth this nourishing cream all over the sunburned area and let is soak in. Repeat frequently as needed.

So, you’ve returned back home or to your hotel after getting burned at the beach, poolside or at the bbq. It’s time to do some much-needed repair work on your freshly sunburned skin. In order to help rid the skin of dead skin cells and flaky dry patches, you will want to use an effective exfoliator. I love Mama Mio OMega Body Buff. What’s so cool about this scrub is that instead of traditional sugar granules or other abrasive exfoliants, Mama Mio OMega Body Buff utilizes micro ground pumice grains that don’t scratch or further irritate already sensitive skin. Along with micro ground pumice grains, this soothing exfoliator includes skin softening ingredients such as; Sweet Almond Oil, Aloe Vera, Chamomile and  Vitamin E. Apply the Body Buff up to three times a week. This will help keep the sunburned skin soft and smooth while it’s healing.

So now that you are on the path to replenishing and repairing damaged sunburn skin, you will need to constantly add moisture and hydration on a daily basis throughout the remainder of the summer. Sunburned skin tends to have a rough, scaly texture that can be quite unattractive and unappealing. In order to avoid this, you will want to slather your freshly exfoliated skin with a highly emollient rich body cream, lotion or butter. I can’t live without my Body Shop Body Butters. I personally LOVE Satsuma, Mango, Coconut, Strawberry and Sweet Lemon!!

Product Review: Purity of Elements Skincare

March 25th, 2013

One of the most important aspects of spring beauty is fresh, healthy skin. I tend to ramp up my skincare efforts in the spring as I find myself spending more time outdoors which equals more exposure to the elements including the sun, rain and humidity. As a ritual, I love to switch up my wintery cream-based cleansers and heavy duty moisturizers in favor of lighter spring-ready skin care that still pack a powerful punch in the nurturing and protecting department. My new favorite skin care system consists of three skincare products from Purity of Elements, a natural skin care line founded by a mother and daughter duo. What makes Purity of Elements so unique is that unlike other natural or organic lines, this skin care line fuses natural ingredients, essences and antioxidants with scientific elements.

I started my journey towards spring ready skin with the Daily Purifying Polish, $32. This gentle facial scrub has an antioxidant rich formula with Jojoba oil, Mandarin Orange Extract, Soybean Germ Extract and Antioxidant Tea and Berry Blend. The scrub is very lightweight and smells very crisp and clean. I used a pea-sized amount for my face and neck and was very pleased with the consistency. It wasn’t too abrasive or harsh on the skin but at the same time I liked the way it removed any dry, chapped or flaky skin especially around my T-zone area.

After rinsing my face, I then slathered on a generous amount of the Mandarin Marine Moisture Mask, $52 (say that four times fast J) This mask is a clear mask meaning it goes on clear and dries clear. This moisture-rich treatment mask includes Algae Extract, Magnesium, Hyaluronic Acid and Ginger Root for ultra-hydration and skin smoothing results. Along with nourishing skin, this mask also helps eliminate fine lines and wrinkles while increasing collagen production. After smoothing the mask on my face and neck, I left it on for the allotted time of 10 minutes.

Once the 10 minutes was up, I gently wiped the mask off with a warm facecloth. Next, I applied the Super Charged Copper Serum, $62.  This multi-mineral serum with Copper, Zinc, Magnesium and Hyaluronic Acid is a super skin treatment that clarifies and tones skin while helping to prevent signs of aging. I tapped the lightweight serum onto face just as the directions stated. I then applied my current favorite moisturizer on top of my serum for additional protection.

After just one application of all three products, I can see and feel a difference in my skin. This is my new go-to spring clean regimen. Gorgeous skin, here I come.
