Pure Beauty – Avoiding Toxins in Personal Care Product

You eat organic food and buy natural cleaning products all in the attempt to remove toxins from your life.  The one thing that you probably haven’t thought about is your personal care items.

The Hidden Toxins

Many personal care items contain one or more known toxins that can cause everything from cancer to all sorts of skin and health issues.  Your makeup, hair care products, even your lotions and sunscreens, all the products that you look for to protect you, may in fact be causing you more harm.

The even worse news is that the majority of personal care products aren’t checked for safety and there is no “watchdog” to ensure your products are safe.  Personal care products aren’t required by law to list their ingredients nor do they have to test for safety or for side effects that the products may cause.  Even products listed as natural may contain some of these harmful chemicals.

Your skin is your largest organ and it absorbs about 60% of what is applied to it with areas that are tenderer such as the face, underarms and private areas absorbing up to 100% depending on the type of chemical.  After looking at those numbers and realizing the government or the manufacturers aren’t looking out for you, you’ll come to the quick realization that you are the only one who is looking out for your health.

Education for Protection

After all that bad news, you’re probably wondering how you can protect yourself, after all, you need to use personal care products.  The answer to that question is that you education yourself.  Learn to read the labels of the products; find out which ingredients are ones associated with causing health issues.

Some of the most harmful ingredients are fragrance or parfum, lead, mercury, dyes, phthalates, parebens, nanoparticles, petroleum byproducts, formaldehyde, triclosan, BHT and sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate.  In some ways, the rule is, if you can’t pronounce it then you probably shouldn’t use it, comes into play here.  These chemicals are known to cause all sorts of health issues.

You might be a little surprised at some of the items on this list such as lead and mercury since they are banned from being used in paints and warned about ingesting too much through fish.  However, they are still legal to use in your skin care products because of the lack of regulation.

Where to Find Help

Stop using the products made with the harmful ingredients and switch to ones that are free of them.  If you want to check out a product you can do research on the EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database or the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics websites.  These sites not only will show you what is in your products but they can recommend products that have worked to remove harmful toxins from their personal care products.

If you’re in the store already looking and forgot what you need to look for always avoid products containing fragrance.  You can also check the bottles to see if they are labeled EU Compliant, paraben free or phthalate free.  Natural and organic products are also generally a good way to go but don’t just trust it blindly, read the labels to make sure that some of these chemicals or metals aren’t being sneaked in.

Often you can also consider products made for those with sensitive skin because they usually don’t have dyes, fragrances and other heavy toxins that cause skin flare ups and other problems.  Once again, make sure you check the product to make sure of its ingredients.

By educating yourself and switching your products over to ones that are less harmful, you can protect your health while looking and feeling great about your personal care products.
